July 2008 saw the launch of Costa Blanca Samaritans (CBS), a not-for-profit organisation registered with the Generalitat Valenciana, with the objective of providing a free, telephone- based, English language support service for people of any age experiencing emotional problems of any type or intensity, some of whom might be despairing, or even suicidal. The service is modelled on that offered for more than 50 years in the U.K.
CBS is comprised entirely of un-paid volunteers, with all of those answering the telephones extensively trained to “stand alongside” people through their suffering.
Samaritan volunteers listen regardless of how big or small the issue, and listen too without judging or telling people what they should or shouldn’t do. Not being aligned to any other organisation, social, religious or political, assists this neutrality, allowing callers to explore their situation their way. What is heard is entirely confidential within the organisation, and no calls are recorded or traced, and no caller needs to give any personal information to talk to a volunteer.
The CBS listening service was extended in 2009 and again this year and is now available every evening between 8p.m. and midnight. Further extension is entirely dependent on volunteer numbers and funding. CBS is entirely dependent on donations, whether this is the time and skills of the listeners and supporters, or the donations of funds or equipment from the many organisations and individuals up and down the coast who have already helped. More of both are always needed to build the service.
